Getting Started Gear

What to wear race morning:

  • Triathlon Kit
  • Warm clothes if needed
  • Timing chip on ankle – given by the race
  • Your 2nd pair of running shoes to wear until race start (NOT your race pair)
  • Watch
  • Heart Rate Monitor Strap

What you need with you race morning:

  • Bottle of water, heavy in electrolytes to sip on throughout the morning.
  • Pre-race Fuel (more if you have a later start time) – Can be in another bottle – liquid calories like UCAN, Tailwind, etc. Plus, a gel taken with water 15 min before the start of your race.
  • If you don’t have anyone to hand off your water bottle to, have a throw away bottle that you can toss at the race start.
  • Chafe cream – put on neck, under arms (any part of body that may be rubbed by wetsuit or clothing
  • Sunscreen

Swim

  • 2 Pairs of Goggles – Light lens and/or dark lens for race morning sun.
  • Baby shampoo and water in a small bottle to rinse out goggles before the start. You can also use Foggle wipes. 
  • Swim cap
  • Wetsuit or swim skin over your tri suit (pending water temp)

Bike

Run

  • Running shoes
  • Socks
  • Speed laces for run shoes for ease of entry (you should not be tying your shoes in transition – make sure to test these ahead of time)
  • Race belt with your bib number (bib numbers are given by the race)
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Gels or personal nutrition (if not taking nutrition from aid stations on course)
  • Salt – Check out Base Salts which is carried in a small vial

Extra’s

  • Tire pump (however most races have bike tech’s and have pumps in transition to use)
  • Post-race clothing to change into
  • Post-race fuel / Recovery drink for quick recovery

Special Needs Bags (FULL IRONMAN’s ONLY)

  • Extra nutrition to pick up halfway or extra nutrition in case you lose a bottle.
  • Chafe cream
  • Sunscreen
  • Optional: bike tube, c02, extra socks
